Equipment Industry Recruiting: Principles That Still Matter

Someone sent us an original Jordan-Sitter Associates brochure printed in 1978. He had kept it for more than 45 years, and seeing it again felt a little like opening a time capsule.

As we read through it, we were struck by how closely its message reflects the way we continue to work today.

A Look Back at Recruiting in 1978

So much about recruiting has changed since that brochure was printed. There was no LinkedIn, no applicant tracking software and no online database of professional profiles. Finding the right person depended heavily on relationships, industry knowledge and a recruiter’s ability to understand what a company truly needed.

The tools available today are different, and the market moves much faster. But the principles behind a successful search have changed far less than we might expect.

Why Equipment Industry Knowledge Matters

One line in the original brochure reads, “We know the difference between a sprocket and a hoist cylinder.”

It is a memorable way of making an important point: we know the equipment industry.

Jordan-Sitter Associates is not a general recruiting firm that occasionally works with an equipment dealer or manufacturer. We understand the machines, companies, positions and people that make this industry work. That knowledge helps us recognize details that may not be obvious to someone recruiting from outside the industry.

Looking Beyond the Job Title

A job title rarely tells the whole story. The same title can represent very different responsibilities depending on the company, market and type of equipment involved.

Industry familiarity helps us ask better questions, understand which experience is truly relevant and identify candidates who can succeed in the role.

That understanding also makes the process more productive for candidates. They are speaking with someone who understands their experience, knows the industry and can have a meaningful conversation about the opportunity.

Why More Resumes Do Not Mean Better Candidates

Another statement from the brochure feels especially relevant today: “You will not receive a pile of resumes.”

Modern recruiting technology has made it much easier to find people. A search can quickly produce hundreds of profiles, applications or possible matches. But a long list of names is not the same as a strong group of candidates.

Evaluating the Person Behind the Resume

A resume can show where someone has worked and what positions they have held. It cannot fully explain how they lead, what motivates them, how they have built relationships or whether their approach will fit the needs of a particular organization.

Our clients do not need us to give them more profiles to sort through. They need us to narrow the field, ask the right questions and provide honest insight into the people being considered.

That was the thinking behind our work in 1978, long before LinkedIn or digital recruiting platforms. It remains central to how we approach equipment industry recruiting today.

The Role of Trust, Confidentiality and Ethics in Recruiting

The original brochure described Jordan-Sitter Associates’ approach as “professional methods combined with urgency, confidentiality, and unquestionable ethics.”

We did not add those words during a recent rebrand. They were written into our materials nearly five decades ago.

Recruiting often requires urgency, particularly when a key leadership, sales or operational role remains open. At the same time, these searches involve people’s careers, company plans and information that may need to remain confidential. Moving quickly cannot come at the expense of good judgment or ethical conduct.

Every search and candidate conversation carries a responsibility to the companies and people involved. That responsibility continues to shape how we approach our work.

Why the Client-Recruiter Relationship Matters

The original brochure also described the client-recruiter relationship as a “two-way street.” That remains one of the most important parts of a successful search.

We can do our best work when clients are candid about the financial and cultural condition of the company, departmental health, position details, responsive throughout the process and prepared to make decisions when the time comes. Honest conversations help us understand what the organization needs beyond the written job description. Direct feedback allows us to refine the search, while timely communication keeps strong candidates interested and engaged.

A recruiter brings industry knowledge, market insight and search expertise to the table. The client brings a clear understanding of the business, its people and what success in the position should look like. When both sides contribute, the process works better.

How the Right Hire Strengthens an Organization

Near the end of the brochure, one sentence brings the entire message together:

“The success and strength of your organization hinges on the competency level of your team.”

The wording may come from 1978, but the idea has not aged.

Recruiting for Long-Term Success

Companies can invest in technology, facilities, equipment and new strategies, but their ability to use those resources well still comes down to their people.

The right hire can strengthen a department, improve customer relationships, develop other employees and help prepare the business for its next stage of growth. The wrong hire can affect performance, culture and momentum long after the position has been filled.

That is why recruiting cannot be reduced to matching a list of qualifications with a stack of resumes. A successful search requires an understanding of the industry, the organization and the person who will ultimately step into the role.

Recruiting Has Changed. The Principles Have Not.

Finding this brochure reminded us of how much has changed since Jordan-Sitter Associates began, and how much has not.

The tools are different. The market moves faster. The ways we find and communicate with candidates continue to evolve. But the principles behind a good search remain much the same: know the industry, look beyond the resume, communicate honestly and do the work with urgency, confidentiality and integrity.

Some things never change. Jordan-Sitter Associates is still built on those principles and focused on what comes next.
